Grammar problem from barrons sat

Numerous collections of short stories include works by Isaac who, despite living in the USA for more than fifty years, CONTINUED TO WRITE primarily in Yiddish.

I changed continued.... to CONTINUED WRITING and found out that the sentence was correct. What can I do to not do this kind of mistakes in future?
