Grammar, Present or Past?

Hi,

I met a girl yesterday, who was from Canada.
I met a girl yesterday, who is from Canada.

Obviously the girl is always from Canada and this shouldn't have changed today, however, the fact is I met her yesterday, and I am talking about things that happened yesterday

Which one is correct? I really don't know.

How about if it's not "yesterday", if it's "a few years ago" ?

A few years ago I met a girl, who WAS from Canada, we had some good time, but she left me finally

A few years ago I met a girl, who IS from Canada, we had some good time, but she left me finally

Sounds like to me WAS is a better choice because it's a few years ago, isn't it?

'Was' is also acceptable. The speaker is thinking of the whole situation in the past. The fact that her origin has not changed at the time of speaking.does not have to affect this.

In real life we'd probably say "I met a girl from Canada yesterday".
