Grammar issue no. 1: needs doing VS needs to be done

Dear Fellow Users,

There are two language stractures I'd like to inquire about. If I'm not mistaken the verb need can be followed by:

to + infinitive
verb + ing
to be + verb in the past participle form (which basically means that something has to be done)

1. needs doing
  • My jacket needs cleaning.
  • His car needs fixing.
2. needs to be done
  • My jacket needs to be cleaned.
  • His car needs to be fixed.

The thing is that I see no difference between these two patterns. Can someone enlighten me?
