What is the difference between

I worked yesterday
I did work yesterday

or

He went to the shop
He did go to the shop

?

The first ones are the normal, unmarked forms. The second ones are used only in special situations of strong emphasis or denial of a previous statement to the contrary.

The first ones are the normal, unmarked forms. The second ones are used only in special situations of strong emphasis or denial of a previous statement to the contrary.

The do/did versions are more emphatic. Perhaps they were said in reply to "You didn't work yesteday, did you" and "You didn't go the shop yesterday, did you" respectively.
