Grammar issue?

I have been told this sentence is incorrect:

At midnight on New Year's Eve I heard the ship's horns sound from the ships in port.

I have rewritten it to read:

On New Year's Eve, all of the ship's horns were sounded at midnight.

Does this look correct now, or should I rewrite another way? Thanks!

You made the same mistake in the second sentence. There were several ships. the ships' horns is what you need.
