Grammar help pls

I was reading a book, the hobbit, and a sentence confused me with the comma placements and such . So this is how the sentence was written:

''And suddenly first one and then another began to sing as they played, deep-throated singing of the dwarves in the deep places of their ancient homes;and this is like a fragment of their song, if it can be like their song without their music''

I don't understand why the commas was placed between word 'played' and 'deep-throated'. It doesn't make sense to me Emotion: sad
Can you tell me how this is grammatically correct?
