Grammar help please?

Hi,

Would you please comment these sentences for me?

I am [ determined / resolved ] to succeed. (Both words mean "decide with a firm decision", are they equally common in the usage or conversation?)

It is sad that many of these [ killed / dead ] were children. (Both words are correct and they are adjectives)

Cheers
