The Woman in the “Burnished Throne”

In lines 77-110 of his poem, The Wasteland: “II A Game of Chess,” T.S. Eliot utilizes imagery and references to stylistically distinguish his speaker. The speaker is introduced as a female sitting in a chair “like a burnished throne, / [glowing] on the marble.” The chair’s description refers to Cleopatra’s barge and evokes her splendor and nobility upon the speaker. Eliot further builds on the speaker’s extravagant atmosphere by intricately detailing a table with “fruited vines” housing “golden” Cupidons. The speaker is physically adorned in glittery jewelry which catches the reflected light of the candelabra off the resplendent table. Internally however, she is “troubled” and “confused.” Through the use of “[ u ]nguent”; the speaker tries to soothe and drown out her unpleasant, internal disposition. The fireplace exposes a panoramic view framing the candelabra in its “coloured stone.” Eliot describes a “carvèd dolphin” in “sad light” to parallel the “troubled” speaker swimming in “synthetic” perfume in the illumined room. Just above the candelabra is the speaker, resembling the story of Philomel. In antiquity, the setting was reminiscent of an abundant, “sylvan scene.” However, the satanic king degraded the “delicious paradise” when he lewdly assaulted Philomel and cut off her tongue. Philomel was changed into a nightingale..
