Grammar Help

Hi everyone,

I have problems choosing when to use "is/are" or "has been/have been" in the passive sentence.

For example,

1. The book (is/has been) written by Michael.

2. What (is/has been) written is the truth.

An explanation on each choice would greatly help.

Thank you.

Imagine that you are a soldier and your platoon is on patrol. During an ambush, several men are killed, the commanding officer is seriously injured and ammunition is low.

"are killed" refers to the "state of the men" or action verb?

Thank for helping, AlphacceStars.
