Grammar for order in proper names of geographical places

Hello, I would like to know why you say "Nile river" and "lake Chad". I mean, why the common name is in a different position in these examples: with the river, the word "river" is after the proper name of it, while with the lake, the word "lake" is before the proper name.

Is there a grammatical explanation for this different order? Thank you from Spain.
