Should we treat the words in bold as two additional main clauses and thus punctuate the sentence accordingly (with periods or semicolons)? Or treat them as phrases and punctuate accordingly (with commas)?

I wouldn't put a semicolon because it's used in asyndetic complex sentences especially when they contain commas.

I don't know if I agree, however. I don't know if conjunctions are missing or deliberatly omitted at all, seeing as a conjunction(s) would be incorrectly joining the main clause to these phrases, and the words following the first main clause elaborate on the first, so no conjunction would seem logical here.
