Your sentence doesn't really work as proposed. Here is what I would suggest:

If you mean that he didn't play in some specific event due to an accident the use this form:

"He didn't play because of the/an accident." Whether you use "the" or "an" will depend on context.

If you mean that, in general, he hasn't played as a result of an accident then use this:

"He h

I agree that, for whatever reason, we would usually say '...hasn't played since...'. But I don't think that means '...didn't play since...' is wrong.

This is part of an ongoing discussion/disagreement between some speakers of British English and some speakers of North-American English.
