Grammar dispute in the workplace

Hello,

My co-workers and I are having a debate over the following sign posted in our break room. The sign reads, "Toaster ovens are not allowed. Any appliances found that have not been approved by facilities will be confiscated."

Please settle our dispute by telling us if 'Any' in the second sentence is a pronoun or an adjective. Also, what is the verb in the second sentence?

It's silly, I know. These guys just want to hear it from someone else. Emotion: smile

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Brian. "any" is not acting as a pronoun in that sentence, it is modifying "appliances". It the sentence had read, for example: "Ovens are not allowed.

  • Any found here will be confiscated", then "any" would have been a pronoun (replacing "ovens").
  • If you mean the main verb of the second sentence, then the answer is "will be confiscated".
