Went to meet up a friend and he happened to do some shopping. Is this sentence correct?

Top answer

No. I went to meet up with a friend and he happened to do some shopping. As edited, this is now correct grammar, However, I don't clearly understand the connection in meaning between the first part and the second part.

It sounds like

We went to visit the Smiths, and later they watched television.

Or, worse,

Columbus discovered America, and Mars is the fourth planet from the sun.

In other words, there seems to be no good reason to put those two thoughts in one sentence.
