IDENTIFICATION AND ASSAY OF BORAX CONTENT IN WET NOODLES IN SOME TRADITIONAL MARKETS IN "X" CITY

ABSTRACT

Borax is a chemical compound that prohibited as food additive according to WHO and FAO. However, its use in foods is still commonly found, such as in wet noodles. The purpose of its use is to preserve the color, the texture, and the flavor, also for keeping foods last longer. The aim of the study was to identify and assay the content of borax in wet noodles in some traditional markets in X City.
Ten samples taken from 6 traditional markets in X City were examined qualitatively by flame reaction using methanol and concentrated sulfuric acid. The flame color of positive samples containing borax was green. The content of the borax in positive samples then assayed using the method of acid-base titration with NaOH 0,2 N. One ml of 0,2 N NaOH is equivalent to 0,0124 g H3BO3.
The result showed that 8 of 10 samples tested with flame test reaction were containing borax with levels of 0,013% to 0,405%. It can be concluded that wet noodles in some traditional markets in X City contain borax.

Keywords: wet noodle, borax, identification, and content assay.

Mister Micawber in X City Traditional Markets
The samples I took are only from some traditional markets in X City, not in every markets. There are like 20 traditional markets in X City, but I only took 6 of 20. Shouldn't it be "Some Traditional Markets"? What do

Maddy27 Shouldn't it be "Some Traditional Markets"? What do you think?
No; use what I gave you.
Maddy27I've done with the study, is it still "IS", or "WAS"?
You may use either. 'Is' is more immediate for the reader.
Maddy27've actually put it on the keywords, but my professor deleted that keyword :/
