ex1) I want to know if they will come to the place tonight. (OK)

ex2) I want to know if they come to the place tonight. (???)

Do we have to use 'will' in the sentence above ? Why do we have to use 'will'?

If 'will' is not used in the sentence, is the sentence incorrect?
