I used to have light to moderate acne. After using the regimen for about 8 weeks, the spots had completely gone.

Why not "were completely gone" instead?

were completely gone would have been fine. had completely gone just underscores the idea that before the entire eight weeks of treatment finished, the cure was already evident. 8 used to have acne .................................
