Posted June 30, 2008, 9:08 PM EST: If you are looking for a concise grammar book, avoid Oxford English Grammar. Webster's tiny grammar book was adequate in organizing data, but it was limited. So I purchased Oxford's book. Oxford English Grammar is a nightmare format of language history, pronunciation, and language theories. When you reach the grammar section, you don't even know it. Chapters are nondescript with small print. Even the example sentences have occasional punctuation and spelling errors. Oxford, for some reason, likes to use political and colloquial examples it would be better to tackle common errors and use grammatical descriptions as example sentences so as to further elaborate on grammar. Some grammatical terms don't match Webster's, and there is very little and/or scrambled information about the parts of speech. The book is heavy, but the weight is a result of the author laboring over simple details (which you can ignore). I couldn't even locate 'predicate nominative,' and I had no clue what Oxford's equivalent term is. Oxford assumes that you have a mastery of grammar, but even experts need a quick reference guide. Oxford tediously drags itself through simple and esoteric aspects of language. When you're searching for the middle ground - clear descriptions and usage of grammar and punctuation - Oxford quickly brushes the information under the rug. I do like Oxford dictionaries, but the grammar book is very disappointing. I would prefer to see Random House Webster's Pocket Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation book expanded (but without the spelling page).
