Grammar and Sentence Structure

I have an assignment to describe a picture, and I'm working on the first paragraph. I've used quite many synonyms, so I'd appreciate if you could point out any grammatical errors or awkward words in the sentences below. Thanks a lot!

In the middle of an obscure lodgement, a dormant elder lies. His torso covers a walnut-wooden writing desk. Head resting against his radial bone, with pieces of paper laying abroach. His gold and purple patterned garments resembles the 18th centuries coats and breeches that was donned by the wealthy.

Edit: Small changes.
