Grammar advice please?

Hi there,

Please advise me what is the better word choice to you for these sentences?


The health tends to deteriorate/degrade when age.

He is now deteriorating. (Smoking, drinking, gambling…etc)

The relationships of the two countries are deteriorating/degrading.

The strong bleach will rot/deteriorate this cloth.

That empire decayed/deteriorated in the nineteenth century.
