Grammar advice please?

Hi there,

Could you advise me which word is better word choice or sounds natural to you, please?

I fear/dread/am scared to fly in a plane.

I fear/dread/am scared to swim.

I fear/dread/am scared to stay alone in the dark.

Overall, "fear" and "dread" are pretty much same meaning, am I correct?

Thanks in advance.
