Hello everyone,

Are the following sentences correct?

1. He likes to start walking at 8:00.

2. He likes starting walking at 8:00.

3. He likes to swim in June.

I think all are correct, but in #2, there are two gerunds. I think it is difficult to say two gerunds successively, but it's still correct. Is that right?

Regards,

Joseph

  • No.
  • For some reason yet to be explained, very often two "-ing" verbs in a row just sounds non-English, and this is one of those times.

I think #1 & #3 are correct. You could also say:

  • He likes walking at 8:00.
  • He likes starting to walk at 8:00.
  • He likes swimming in June.

#2 doesn't sound good. Don't use it.
