Hello everyone,

Could you please tell me if either "was able to" or "could" correct in the following sentences?

1. He could/was able to run fast and won the race.

2. He could/was able to run fast but lost the race.

I think both are correct with either "could" or "was able to".

Regards,

Joseph

Joseph A I think both are correct with either "could" or "was able to". Yes, but in the affirmative, "could" doesn't mean "succeeded at" or "managed to", so you can't use Because he ran fast, he could win the race . to mean Because he ran fast, he won the race.
