Hello everyone,

Is either "was able to" or "could" correct in the following sentences?

1. The prisoner was able to escape last night.

2. The prisoner could escape last night.

I think #1 is correct because we have a time expression (last night) or a specific time in the sentence. So "was able to" should be used with it.
