George told me that the tyrant had tried his hardest to destroy Bosnian culture, and that he had nearly succeeded. This, he said, was ................(despite/due to) the destruction of many villages, which had been at the heart of the culture of the Bosnians.
I chose "due to".
P.S.I asked this question before, but I didn't get the correct answer. An anonymous said "It is unclear due to the presence of (This) at the beginning of the second sentence" and said "I can't tell what (This) refers to". I think it refers back to the action in the first sentence, which is (to destroy Bosnian culture). Please help me choose the correct word. If there is any problem in the sentence correct it for, please. I appreciate your help.
Regards,
JA
We can't tell what this refers to and since the choice between due to and despite depends entirely on it, both answers could be correct (or wrong).
