Hello everyone,
Is either "despite" or "due to" correct in the following sentence?
George told me that the tyrant had tried his hardest to destroy Bosnian culture, and that he had nearly succeeded. This, he said, was ................(despite/due to) the destruction of many villages, which had been at the heart of the culture of the Bosnians.
I think "due to"is correct.
I can't tell what "this" refers to. It is hard to fix the rest of the sentence while that problem exists. His nearly succeeding wasn't due to anything, and neither was his trying to destroy Bosnian culture.

His nearly succeeding wasn't due to anything, and neither was his trying to destroy Bosnian culture. Neither thing was despite anything. I suspect the writer wanted to say that despite his destruction of many villages, he failed, but I can't wrest that meaning from the present sentence.
