The grammar is OK, but the usage of "simmered down" is a little strange.

It's not exactly wrong, but it could be better written. "Simmered down" doesn't sound wonderful. Simmering down doesn't remove the heat or fire. Simmering reduces liquid. I'm not a fan of that in this context. The pain diminished, fizzled out, etc.
