This is something I come across in my English textbook:

We look forward only to seeing a narrow path leading to the top of the mountain.

From what I understand, "look forward to" in this instance means "look straight ahead", not "expect something eagerly", so I cannot understand why to + Ving is used?


Can anyone explain?

We looked ahead, only to see a narrow path leading to the top of the mountain.
