Hi! I want to know if this is correct "it happened to me once when i had him as my lock screen. The only difference was that we were not dating" or should I say "... the only difference is that we are not dating"? Considering it as a fact.

It happened to me once when I had him as my lock screen. (I don't understand. How can a person be a screen?) The only difference was (I assume you are referring to the event that happened in the past.) that we were not dating.
