Hello

Could you please tell me if the highlighted part of the statement below is correct or not?

-If those planners had thought more carefully, perhaps they would have killed the project.

I am not sure whether is correct or not, because in my view the result clause contradicts the condition clause "thought more carefully" "Killed the project".
