From some answers on the blog I infer that one shouldnt use stative verbs in the past perfect? I know that stative verbs are not to be used in continious tenses, but concerning past perfect, please tell if the following sentences are correct. "Until he fell in love he had been the best student in the class" or Until he fell in love he was the best student in the class?

They are both OK. The choice of tense depends on the narrative flow, and the author's choice of what events and sequences to emphasize.
