Grammar

Hello everybody,

I have a doubt.
Is it correct to say: They have gone on holiday since Sunday or They have been on holiday since Sunday. My grammatical instinct says the second one is correct but I don't know how to explain it to someone else.
Thank you.

Top answer

They have been on holiday since Sunday. They started on Sunday and they continue to "be" on holiday at this moment. "Gone" doesn't work well here because they can't be in a continued state of having gone since Sunday, continuing until this moment.

  • They have been on holiday since Sunday.
  • They started on Sunday and they continue to "be" on holiday at this moment.
  • "Gone" doesn't work well here because they can't be in a continued state of having gone since Sunday, continuing until this moment.
  • They went on holiday on Sunday.
  • They have been on holiday since Sunday.

They have gone on holiday. (This expresses a one-time event of leaving home.) They have been gone since Sunday. (This expresses a state that started Sunday and continues to the present.)
