Grammar

I've heard an English-native speaker saying:
"There is a lot of people"
Is it correct? I'd put it the verb in plural but now I got a bit confused-maybe singular is also OK.

It's considered acceptable colloquially and in informal contexts. Otherwise, use the plural "are."

Note that the article linked to mentioned there's, the contracted form. Even people who use there's before plurals informally rarely use there is.

Actually, it was an online lecture. I've read this article proposed by teechr (thank you!) and the example given was with "lots of...". So it looks like it is correct for spoken English but not for written one.

I heard "There is a lot of resources available to them." in a radio interview today. It sounded "wrong" to me, but apparently not to others...
