for example : "He said he had lost his passport and hadn't been able to leave the country".
Here, can I say "couldn't have" instead "hadn't been able".
Another example:"I could have lent you the money .why didn't you ask me?
Here, can I say"had been able" instead "could have".
If answer no, so,why ?
