After I left school I started work because I needed the money.

Why was the definite article use?
Can we not use it?

You can omit the article, but it would change the meaning slightly. , or because you needed more than you already had in order to do something you wanted to do. I needed the money would suggest that you would have preferred to do something else than work (perhaps go to college), but the need to have an income in order to support yourself meant that you had little choice but to go to work.

I needed money would suggest that you needed money for some purpose, either because you had none and needed it for food, etc., or because you needed more than you already had in order to do something you wanted to do.
