hi friends,

In the follwing bold sentence I could not get the verb!

“No matter how much the prisoners were vilified by politicians and the press as filthy dregs and toxic scum: heaps of stick-legged corpses couldn’t be hidden from view. The odd unexplained death, maybe—there had always been the odd unexplained death, said Ed, shrugging—but not heaps.”

thanks

The verb (in fact the whole predicate) is omitted. "The odd unexplained death could be hidden from view " is assumed.
