Is it correct to say that 'a letter said so and so', or is the correct phrasing 'a letter read so and so'?

Is this also applicable to books newspapers etc? Do they read or do they say?

Anonymous Is it correct to say that 'a letter said so and so', Yes, it's perfectly fine in all but the most formal contexts. However, in my opinion 'read' is not the right verb in the most formal situation. I would paraphrase it using the author's name and the verb 'write'.
