Which is correct?
"When guests would come over to our house for dinner, I would offer to take their coats even though I couldn't hang them up by myself."

Or

"When guests came over to our house for dinner, I offered to take their coats even though I couldn't hang them up by myself."

The second tells of a single past situation -- or a habitual situation (where "used to" could be implied). "Would" is used by many with the same understanding of habitual action. I try to keep that structure away from beginning students so they don't confuse it with the conditional use of "would".
