A few days later he came back only to find that the troops had left.
is this sentence correct ? I think it should be changed into "A few days later he came back only to HAVE FOUND that the troops had left."because the verb in the main sentence is past tense ,the infinitive should maintain the tense consistence by useing HAVE FOUND.

No. It does not need to be changed. The infinitive is not inflected for tense in expressions like 'only to find'. The finding, after all, was after the coming back, so from the point of view of the coming back, the finding was in the future.
