Or can I put it this way..

The last time I had been to London was three years back?

No. The Past Perfect refers to something that happened before some other event or point in the past.

eg I went to London a week back. The last time I had been to London was three years earlier.

If that's what it means, the sentence i wrote should be right.
The last time I had been to London was Three years back. Like three years ago from day today. Event happened before this point 'today' hence it should be grammatically correct.

Did you go to London and return, all today? That's what it sounds like.

Or are you thinking that 'today' refers to a point in the past?
