It's OK informally (but say 'the' funeral).

I suppose you know that a more correct beginning would be 'I have just returned...'

Incidentally, a next-day funeral after a violent death seems a bit unlikely (at least in most parts of the world).

Yes. I wasn't writing formally or writing to anyone in a formal manner that I should have considered capitalisation. I do consider it but if i don't then I don't think it should matter unless you are asking any question or formally writing.
