Grammar

Hello. I gave my students a task from the PET exam and there was the following transformation exercise:
I prefer doing sport to watching TV.
I like doing sport __________ watching TV.
The correct asnwer according to the key was "better/more than". My student wrote "instead of". This sounds incorrect to me but not being a native speaker myself I can't to find a good and clear explanation to offer her. Could anyone help me with it?
