My friend writes "I did go to the cinema and I did see a movie.." etc. instead of I went and I saw. I find this very strange as we generally don't write in this format - unless it is active speech with emphasis on the "did". Is this part of speech (aux + infinitive) simple past tense or does it have a special name?
