In my opinion, in this sentence the blank could be left as it is, without adding any word. In the other hand, a structure like “as + ADJECTIVE + ARTICLE (a) + NOUN (part or Austria)” would also be possible. Could you give me an idea of what adjective, if any, could be used? Thanks in advance.

Many people tend to think of it as........................... a part of Austria or an extension of the Balkans. Neither is correct. Croatia has its own special personality.

No, this can't be done. The adjective would have to come after the article. I wouldn't be able to advise you on what word to use because I don't know what you have in mind. I do think the sentence is fine as it writt
