I believe it is singular.......e.g. ......mumps is a disease. I don't thing I've ever heard of e.g. ....

It's singular. It's the name of a disease, just like diabetes and (the) measles, which are also singular.

Oh forget it. I can't squeeeze a post in this forum to save my life. Anyway, in my experience most Americans tend to use it in the singular.
