If I tell you I will meet you at the bank at 1 o'clock, you expect to see me there at 1. I have promised.

If I tell you I can meet you at the bank at 1 o'clock, you do not expect to see me there at 1. I have not promised anything. I have only said that I am able to do it (if I want to).
