My daughter is in first grade and this sentence (She is at the tree.) was used as a sample sentence using the word "tree". It just sounds wrong to me. I would prefer, "She is by the tree". Just wondering if it grammatically correct.

As I said, it's correct grammar. But it's not something you'd be likely to say very often.
