Grammar

Good morning, everyone. I have just studied about two-word verbs and i want to share with friends here. So that, we can glean more knowledge together.

PHRASAL VERBS

The term phrasal verbs refers to a verb and preposition or adverb which together have a special meaning. For example, put + off means postpone. Sometimes a phrasal verb consist of three parts (verb + adverb + preposition). For example, put + up + with means tolerate. Phrasal verbs are also called two-word verbs or three-word verbs.

1. Nonseparable phrasal verbs :

They are the combinations of :

verb + preposition : to run into, to look after

verb + adverb + preposition : to look down upon, to go along with

verb + adverb : to go away

The Object must be put after the compination :

- I have got to look after my little sister.

- I ran into an old friend yesterday.

- I ran into her yesterday.

Prepositions and Adverbs :

Always prepositions : after, against, at for, from, into, like, to, with, without.

Always adverbs : away, back, toward, out.

Can be used as adjectives or prepositions : about, across, along, around, before, behind, by, down, in, off, on, over, round, through, under, up.

2. Separable phrasal verbs :

The combination will be verb + adverb : to hang in, to hang up.

The problem depends on the kind of Object :

I handed my paper in yesterday. (V + N + Adv)

I handed in my paper yesterday. (V + Adv + N)

I handed it in yesterday. (V + Pron + Adv)

Please just tell me if i have made some mistakes.

Thanks a lot for watching, it's nice that we can learn together.

Sincerely,

G.Nguyen.
