why do countries such as....

"People's Republic of China"

don't have the article "the" in it? while others have like

"The Republic of Korea"

"The Republic of the philippines"

Just to clarify, my question was addressed to the original poster, not to Dave Phillips, whose reply I had not seen at the time.

I think that most people would say, "I plan to visit the People's Republic of China" next year. It would sound strange to leave out "the."

There is no "rule." It all depends on what the majority decide. For example, when I was young, we referred to The Sudan, The Ukraine, and The Lebanon. Nowdays, most people do not use "the" with Sudan and Ukraine. And nobody ever says The Lebanon
