Shouldn't it be "a lot of fun"? "very fun" sounds very ackward to me...

fun is sometimes used as an adjective in very casual conversation.

I don't think it's limited to very casual conversations any longer. M-W lists it as an adjective without a usage note or "colloq" note.

Was the party fun?

(I'm not sure I'd use "very fun" except quite casually - that sounds a bit odd. But "so fun" I would in a heartbeat.)
